Burglar Proof Your Business
5 Top Tips to Deter Unwanted Intruders but Keep your Business attractive.
Business premises are usually unoccupied overnight and are tempting targets for intruders.
They may target your stock or just want to steal what is generally left in open view. Whatever they want to take from you - the destruction, disturbance and cost of repair often exceeds the actual loss by theft.
Planners are commonly legislating against external shutters however many other strategies can be put into play to keep your business safe and attractive to passers-by 24 hours a day.
Crime decreases if the opportunity for EASY access is eliminated.
1. Reinforce your Doors and Windows.
The entry point for most burglaries is through door and window openings. By careful selection you can install glazed screens with secure hardware that have hidden reinforced plates around the locks and strike plates. If you are not installing new doors and frames upgrade locks and hinges. Rear doors and windows can have anti-theft bars and grilles making unwanted entry much more difficult.
2. Install Motion Sensors aka Motion Detectors.
These electronic devices detect motion and any following movement within a monitored area. Before anything happens, the sensor can set off electronic cameras, external lighting, security alarms or notify security services. These can be difficult to install externally as weather conditions or wildlife can activate false alarms.
3. Add Windows and Door Alarms.
These have two benefits:
- A loud sound will be broadcast if they are opened without the alarm being deactivated.
- The alarm will not set if any window or door is not correctly closed and locked.
4. Invest in Security Cameras.
The sophistication of cameras has gone up while the prices have come down. Not only will the cameras broadcast and record what happens they will inform you or your monitoring service when someone has attempted to enter your premises. They can activate spotlights or activate sirens.
5. Design to Reduce Crime.
This is best considered when planning a Refurbishment /Fit Out or New Build.
Spaces can be designed so that clear markings distinguish where the public can go and what areas are off limits. Devalue the appeal to intruders by clearly showing that it will be difficult to enter and if they get in – there will be difficulties for them to steal anything of value.
